How to apply for GATE (Gifted and Talented Education)
The LAUSD eChoices portal (apply.lausd.net) is the centralized online application hub used by the Los Angeles Unified School District to manage placements for all specialized, integration, and magnet programs district-wide.
1. Key Programs Offered via eChoicesThrough eChoices, families can submit applications for several specialized program tracks:
Gifted / Highly Gifted Magnets: Specialized magnet campuses with accelerated curricula for students verified as gifted or highly gifted (99.5th+ percentile).
Schools for Advanced Studies (SAS): Neighborhood campuses designated for exemplary instruction tailored to gifted and high-achieving students.
Standard Magnet Programs: Themed programs (STEM, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Law) providing specialized instruction.
Multilingual Multicultural Programs (MMP): Dual Language Education (DLE) programs in Spanish, Mandarin, Korean, French, and other languages.
Affiliated Charter Schools & Zones of Choice (ZOC): Out-of-boundary access to district affiliated charters or assignment choices within designated neighborhood zones.
2. Timeline & Application Windows
LAUSD runs on a strict annual schedule for the upcoming school year:
On-Time Application Window: Opens October 1 and closes early November (typically November 6). Applying during this window gives students the highest priority in lottery selections.
Verification Deadline: For GATE, SAS, or Gifted Magnet applications, official Verification of Eligibility forms must be submitted by the student's current school around mid-to-late November.
Selection & Match Results: Families typically receive selection or waiting list notifications in late winter or early spring (February/March).
Late Application Window: Opens around December 1. Late applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis and placed at the bottom of waitlists.
3. How Program Selection & Rankings Work
Multiple Choices: For Magnet, SAS, and Dual Language programs, families can list up to 3 choices ranked by preference.
Selection Logic:
If a student is matched to their 1st choice, choices 2 and 3 are automatically canceled, and they are not placed on any waitlist.
If matched to their 2nd or 3rd choice, they may accept that seat while remaining on the waitlist for higher-ranked options.
If not selected for any listed choices, the student is placed on the waitlist for their 1st choice only.
4. The Priority Point System (Magnets)
For Magnet and Gifted Magnet choices, LAUSD uses a weighted point system (up to 12 points) to determine lottery position:
1. Waitlist Points (up to 12 pts): Accumulated when a student applies on-time to a magnet program but is not selected due to lack of space (4 points per year, up to 3 consecutive years).
2. Matriculation Points (4 pts): Awarded when transitioning from an elementary magnet to a middle magnet, or middle magnet to high school magnet.
3. Sibling Points (3 pts): Awarded if an applicant has an active sibling enrolled at the same magnet school site.
4. Predominantly Hispanic, Black, Asian and Other Non-White (PHBAO) School Points (4 pts): Awarded if the applicant currently attends an LAUSD resident school designated as PHBAO.
